The continuous growth of Zurich (CH) provokes the reassessment of old industrial areas. Built in what was at the time the periphery, those sites are now located in the city centre, facing their destruction to give way for denser and therefore more profitable uses.Built in 1897, the old freight depot of Zürich is facing this situation. The «Güterbahnhof» was dismissed from the list of protected buildings, to give way to the new police and justice department, including an new prison for the Canton of Zürich. Situated in a residential area, just vis-à-vis of Zürich-West, the building contains great spacial qualities. There is for example the former track field, which is protected from any noise by the building itself, or the dispatching halls in their at the time new and highly modern form. In a preliminary publication of 120 pages, a detailed analysis as well as historic research lead to several proposals concerning the volumetry and program of the building. The project proposes a conversion and extension of the old freight depot of Zürich in a congress center, a program actually in search for a site. The intervention on the existing building is concentrated on the eastern part where the administrative building gives way to a new head for the complex and opens up the ground floor for the public to access a new promenade on the old rails, at the scale of the city. In the east stands a tower hotel which is in dialogue with Zürich-West, helping to densify the site in order to keep the intervention on the halls as small as possible. This rehabilitation project tries to demonstrate that it is possible to keep the industrial buildings within the cities and to create new quality spaces for the inhabitants
